Choosing ballistic vests
Concealable vest or outer vest
A concealable vest is armor you wear under your clothes. The ballistic tank top and t-shirt use a 4 mm panel and weigh under 3 lb, so they disappear under a normal shirt. The KEOPS is a quilted casual vest and the MILES vest looks like a jacket, so both can be worn as outerwear that nobody questions.
An outer vest is worn where it can be seen. The DRF outer vest carries full MOLLE webbing across the front and back for pouches and gear, and it adjusts at the shoulders and sides to fit over a uniform or a coat. It is built for law enforcement, security teams and patrol work rather than for staying covert.
Protection level: what a soft vest stops
The soft armor in these vests is rated for handgun threats. NIJ Level IIIA is designed to stop rounds such as 9mm, .357 SIG, .44 Magnum and .45 ACP. A soft vest is not rated for rifle rounds. If rifle threats are part of your day, add hard plates rated Level III or Level IV and a carrier that takes them.
No armor stops every threat. Read the level and the rounds it is tested against before you choose, and let the certification, not the marketing, guide the decision.
Fit and sizing
Each style is cut differently. The DRF comes in male and female styles, the female tank top is built on a female-specific pattern, and the MILES vest is cut for women. The table lists the size range of every vest. Measure over the shirt you wear most days, not bare skin, and check the size charts before you order.
Care, warranty and the Survivors Club
Remove the ballistic panel before washing, wash cold and air dry. Ballistic warranties run 8 to 10 years depending on the product and cover the ballistic performance of the panel from the date of purchase. Through the Survivors Club, a garment struck by a projectile in service is repaired or replaced free.
