Against what type of ammo does each level protect from?

Does level IIIA protect against stabs and slashes?

It does protect from slashes, however for stabs you will need to add our NIJ 0115 Certified Spike Panels. You can find them here:

Do you ship overseas?

We do ship overseas! However, as we abide by the U.S law, we do not commercialize to countries in the U.S Sanction List.

Are your items really bullet proof?

The term, "bullet proof" is actually the wrong term. Items can be bullet resistant, since there is always a threat that can defeat the armor. However, our products are designed to meet the strictest NIJ Standards and, when used under the proper conditions, they are fully capable of saving your life at the indicated protection level.

What payment method can I use?

We accept most major credit cards along with Paypal, Shop Pay, Shopify Payments, Wire Transfers as well as cash and checks at our physical location. 

Can bullet resistant vests stop rounds from shotguns?

We can confirm that the NIJ Level IIIA can stop certain shotgun loads.

What protection level are MC Armor products certified to?

Our soft armor line, tank tops, the Krypton hoodie, and the Sentinel jacket, is certified HG2 / Level IIIA, tested against 9mm and .44 Magnum handgun rounds. Is MC Armor NIJ certified?

Yes. Our ballistic panels are tested and certified under NIJ standards, the same testing body used for law enforcement and military procurement. NIJ certification is specific to the tested panel and level, always confirm the exact product and level you're buying was independently certified, not just that the brand generally references NIJ.

What's the difference between Level IIIA and Level III?

IIIA is the highest rating soft, wearable armor achieves, tested against handgun rounds. Level III is a different category entirely: a rifle rating for rigid hard plates, tested against 7.62mm rifle ammunition. It doesn't stop bigger handgun rounds “better” than IIIA, it's built for a different threat. Full breakdown here.

What's the difference between Level II and Level IIIA?

Both are handgun-rated soft armor levels. Level II (current designation HG1) is tested against 9mm and .357 Magnum. Level IIIA (HG2) is tested against the same 9mm round at higher velocity plus .44 Magnum, a broader handgun threat range. MC Armor's soft armor line is built to the higher IIIA/HG2 standard.

How is body armor actually tested?

Under NIJ protocol, panels are shot from a fixed 5-meter distance, with projectile velocity measured chronographically at impact. Each panel is backed by a standard ballistic clay surface (roughly 14 x 61 x 61 cm) that records how far the armor deforms on impact. A panel is tested for 6 separate impacts, and deformation into the clay backing can't exceed 44mm to pass.

What does “multi-impact” mean on a hard plate?

It's a separate rating from the protection level itself. The level tells you what round the plate stops; the multi-impact rating tells you how many hits it's certified to take in roughly the same area before it's no longer guaranteed to perform. Our MC-III-Plate is rated for 6 shots multi-impact; the higher-rated Orion plate is rated for 2.

What's the difference between “stand-alone” and “in conjunction” armor?

Stand-alone armor is tested and rated on its own, no other layer required to meet its stated level. “In conjunction” panels are only rated to their stated level when paired with a specific companion panel or plate. All MC Armor hard plates are stand-alone rated.

Does MC Armor offer fragmentation protection, not just ballistic protection?

Yes, on select products. Our tank top line carries anti-fragmentation protection certified to STANAG 2920 (FSP 17-grain), a NATO standard for stopping shrapnel and fragment threats, separate from the ballistic (bullet) rating.

Are MC Armor helmets and shields NIJ certified too?

Yes. Our ballistic helmets (PASGT, MICH Plus, OPS Plus) are certified IIIA/HG2 under NIJ 0106.01. Our ballistic shields are certified under NIJ 0108.01, ranging from IIIA/HG2 up to III+/RF2 depending on the model.

Sizing

What size should I order?

Because ballistic panels only protect where they're positioned, check the specific product's size chart rather than defaulting to your regular clothing size, sizing closer and non-shifting is generally the safer choice over a looser fit. Our soft armor line runs S through XXL standard.

Can I get a custom size larger than XXL?

Yes, custom sizing is available up to 11XL. Contact us directly for custom sizing, additional cost applies per size above 2XL.

Do your products cover the front and back, or just the front?

Standard coverage on every soft armor unit is front and back, protecting the chest and back rather than the front alone. This is included as standard, not an upsell.

How do I decide between soft armor and a hard plate?

Soft armor (IIIA) covers handgun-level threats and is built to be worn concealed under regular clothing. Hard plates cover rifle-level threats, are heavier, and are worn visibly in a plate carrier. What's the difference between the men's and women's tank top?

Both are certified HG2/IIIA with the same thermoregulating material, flexible panel, and front-and-back coverage. The women's tank top is cut for a women's fit; both are available in black, white, beige, blue, and green, and both offer a V-neck option.

Can I get body armor customized to stop rifle rounds?

Soft armor and rifle-rated hard armor work through different physical mechanisms, a soft panel isn't customizable into a rifle-rated one. What is available: certain garments can be built with a pocket to hold an insertable hard plate (up to Level IV) alongside the soft panel, combining the two rather than upgrading one into the other. Confirm current options and lead time directly with our team.

Do you sell products designed for vehicle use, not just wearable armor?

Yes. Our Freedom ballistic shield is built specifically as a convertible option for vehicle mounting or personal carry, including an integrated LED light for low-visibility conditions.

Legal & Compliance

Is body armor legal to buy where I live?

In 48 states, yes, no license or profession requirement, for anyone not federally prohibited under 18 U.S.C. § 931 (the felony-violence restriction). New York and Connecticut have specific state purchase requirements. Full state-by-state breakdown here.

Can I ship body armor to New York or Connecticut?

Not as an ordinary online purchase. Both states require the buyer and seller to complete the transaction in person, New York additionally restricts purchase to a list of eligible professions. See our legal guide for exactly what applies.

Who is legally prohibited from owning body armor?

Under federal law, anyone convicted of a felony crime of violence is prohibited from purchasing, owning, or possessing body armor, unless their employer certifies it's necessary for their job and use stays limited to that work. This applies nationwide, regardless of state.

Can I travel with body armor on a commercial flight?

Generally yes, in checked or carry-on baggage, per TSA guidance, but it cannot be worn through security or onto the aircraft, and it's subject to secondary screening at the officer's discretion. This is a federal air-travel rule, separate from state possession law, if your destination state restricts possession (New York or Connecticut), that restriction still applies once you land.

Do you ship internationally, and is body armor legal to import everywhere?

We ship internationally from our Boca Raton, FL facility, but import restrictions on body armor vary by country and are outside U.S. law entirely. Confirm your own country's import rules before ordering; that's the buyer's responsibility, not something we can advise on per destination.

Does a concealed carry permit have anything to do with buying body armor?

No, they're unrelated. A firearms carry permit doesn't grant or restrict body armor purchase rights in the 48 states without a specific armor law. Connecticut is the one exception where a valid state permit or certificate is actually required as part of the body armor purchase itself.

How long does body armor last?

Can I wash my armor like regular clothing?

The removable outer cover can typically be hand-washed with mild soap; the ballistic panel itself should never go in a washing machine, dryer, or through dry cleaning. Follow the specific care instructions shipped with your product.

Where should I store body armor when I'm not wearing it?

Flat, or on a wide, supportive hanger, never folded or compressed. Keep it dry and out of extreme heat; both moisture and heat degrade ballistic material performance over time even without ever being shot.

What do I do if my armor is struck by a round or takes a hard impact?

Stop using that panel immediately and replace it, regardless of how much of its rated service life remains. Ballistic material is generally not rated for a second full-level impact in the same area even if it visibly held. Contact us, impacted units may qualify under our Survivors Club program.

Does body armor set off metal detectors?

Ballistic panel materials in soft armor are generally not metal-based, so a panel itself typically isn't the cause if a detector flags you, but hardware like buckles, D-rings, or zippers on the carrier garment can be. This isn't a guarantee across every screening environment or every product.

If my armor gets slightly wet in the rain, is it ruined?

Not necessarily, but it needs to dry completely before being worn again or stored, don't put damp armor back in a bag or closet. If it's been thoroughly soaked, follow the manufacturer's specific guidance on whether continued use is appropriate.

Where are MC Armor products manufactured?

MC Armor is part of the Miguel Caballero brand, founded in Colombia in 1992, and our garments are manufactured there. NIJ certification and testing are independent of manufacturing location, what's certified is the specific panel construction, tested by an NIJ-approved lab, not where the sewing happens.
